This position will oversee the mapping, geo-referencing, and management of the Arboretum’s grounds and living collections, accessions database, and information and technology systems. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Arboretum Director and staff to develop arboretum maps, trail guidelines, and manage the plant signage and labeling program. The Senior Research Associate will also lead staff and subordinates and represent the Arboretum at stakeholder activities such as meetings, workshops, and conferences.This is a full-time position with competitive compensation and benefits.     IBSS has an immediate opening for a qualified GIS specialist to support on-going ecosystem based research within the Main Hawaiian Islands. 

    The Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is NOAA administers scientific research and monitoring programs that support the domestic and international conservation and management of living marine resources. PIFSC is headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Center has taken a leading role in marine research on ecosystems, both in the insular and pelagic environments. It is implementing a multidisciplinary research strategy including an ecosystem observation system and scientific analysis to support ecosystem approaches to management and restoration of living marine resources.

    Primary tasks relate to the development of human and environmental drivers of marine ecosystem health, working with geospatial data, high‐resolution aerial imagery, and derived products (e.g. habitat maps, topographic complexity metrics), and supporting IEA‐efforts related to Ecosystem‐Based Management.

    Women in GIS (WiGIS) is pleased to announce our new Award and Scholarship Program. In partnership with Esri, Women In GIS will recognize 3 individuals with an award and provide 6 scholarships for women working in geospatial fields. 

    WiGIS scholarships provide funds for education expenses to undergraduate and graduate students and seed grants for women in the professional or academic sectors to support projects and research in a myriad of geospatial areas.

    Applications are accepted from women in any country/region. Underrepresented women are particularly encouraged to apply. You may self-nominate or nominate someone else as well. 

    Scholarships
    Two (2) scholarships will be awarded for each category:

    • Undergraduate - $500
    • Graduate - $1000
    • Grants for practitioners and academics - $2000

    Launching Today: Aloha+ Challenge Dashboard Lab Pilot Program

    Hawai‘i Green Growth UN Local2030 Hub is now accepting applications for six internship positions, for its pilot cohort of the Aloha+ Challenge Dashboard Lab Program launching in Spring 2023 (Jan. - May 2023).

    Internship positions within the Pilot Program will be available to current students and recent graduates of the University of Hawaiʻi System.

    Aerial Mapping System Operator

    Resource Mapping Hawaii is looking for an aerial mapping system operator for our operations in the state of Hawaii based in Honolulu.  This position is a part time position with the potential for full time employment.   The job requires a technically minded individual capable of learning multiple hardware systems, software, and operational acuity.  Any applicant with prior experience is desired but will not be a requirement given the relatively obscure nature of this position.  A background in GIS is a plus and will be one of the skills that will be required to learn if not already familiar.  The position will require a love of flying in small general aviation aircraft and work throughout the state.  A list of the systems / software that the successful applicant will be required to run and will be trained on are as follows:

    • 1.       LiDAR systems
    • 2.       Photogrammetric camera systems (digital)
    • a.        Nadir based ortho mapping
    • b.       Oblique based 3D mapping
    • 3.       Thermal mapping
    • 4.       GPS base station deployment
    • 5.       GIS data manipulation and evaluation
    • 6.       Flight planning
    • 7.       Post mission QC, flight logs, and data shipment

    Compensation for this position will be commensurate with the skills and experience brought to the position.  The successful candidate will initially be paid hourly and will have a 2 month probation period.  After that time, payment schedule and terms will be negotiated.

    Other General Requirements

    • ·        Legally authorized to work in the United States, without restrictions.
    • ·        Must have a driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record.
    • ·        Possess the ability to obtain a valid passport for international travel.
    • ·        Possess a High School Diploma and two years of college/technical training
    • ·        Have a fundamental knowledge of computer operations and the aptitude to operate high-tech sensors during flight as well as data processing software.

    Estimated Start: December 5, 2022

    Requirements:
    A minimum of three (3) years working production experience/knowledge of ArcGIS and ESRI mapping products.

    Preferred Experience:

    • Experience with Trimble Mapping Grade Global Navigation Satellite System to collect and process field data;
    • Experience using the Spatial Data Standards for Facilities, Infrastructure, & Environment (SDSFIE);
    • Experience authoring Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata;
    • Familiarity with provisions, specifications, and estimates for surveying, photogrammetry, LiDAR, and/or GIS scopes of work;
    • Familiarity with developing, modifying, and serving web maps;
    • Familiarity with Oracle and relational database design;
    • Experience with MicroStation CAD files and willingness to work in an interoperable CADD/GIS environment where both software and storage formats are put to use in dual platforms;
    • Working knowledge of standard Microsoft applications.

    Must have good communications and interpersonal skills, both oral and written, to interface with managers, engineers, scientists and other personnel.
     
    Candidate must be proficient with Microsoft Office.  Other geospatial software used in this office includes SDSFIE tools, ERDAS Imagine, Trimble GPS software, and Adobe Photoshop.
    GIS experience is the most important factor.  Will consider education and potential to learn.
