    currently seeking a college student who is willing to work as an (unpaid) intern or volunteer at Hawaii State Civil Defense. Ideal candidate should have some experience using ESRI ArcGIS software and the ability to create basic graphic maps independently. This individual should also have an interest in Emergency Management and must be willing to commit to working 4-8 hours per week at the State Emergency Operating Center in Diamond Head crater.

    Previous intern met the above qualifications and was in the final year of her Natural Resources and Environmental Management (GIS and Remote Sensing Track) undergraduate degree.

    Position Description:

    GIS Technician/Analyst/Programmer providing technical support to entry level staff while working independently to accomplish various GIS tasks. This position requires the candidate be experienced with the ESRI family of products, most notably ArcGIS 9+, and Trimble field GPS units (G-3 through 8 / Base Station, GeoXT, Pathfinder Office, GeoXH). An in depth knowledge of database creation within SDSFIE, and knowledge of Survey analyst and other tools and extensions within ArcMap is required. Programming knowledge and experience is a plus.

    Responsibilities include the following:

    -Creation of high-quality cartographic products -GIS technical and cartographic assistance to on-site staff -Spatial data generation and processing -GPS collection: survey and mapping grade -Conversion of spatial data between software and hardware platforms -Maintaining and creating spatial databases under SDSFIE -Travel at least 50% within the Pacific Rim

    Minimum requirements:

    -BA/BS in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Physical Science, Engineering or related area of study -Ten years work experience using ESRI products.

    -Good interpersonal and communication skills (Written and Verbal).

    Compensation:

    The salary range for this position is based on a combination of education, knowledge, skills, abilities and experience.

    Helber Hastert & Fee, Planners, Inc. seeks a GIS Specialist to support land use, environmental, and facility planning projects across Hawaii and the Pacific Region.

    The position requires a minimum of 2 years work experience utilizing GIS in the fields of planning, geography, cultural/natural resource management, or physical sciences.  Potential candidates must have proven GIS data management skills, experience creating and editing spatial databases, and strong cartographic design skills. In addition to ArcGIS 10, candidate should be familiar with ArcGIS Online, AutoCAD, Sketch Up, Adobe Creative Suite, and MS Office Suite. DoD experience a plus. Salary commensurate with experience.

    Statement of work.

    Duties:

    Contractor shall perform routine and complex geospatial operations as directed by GIS Analysts and supervisor. The candidate will work in a team environment producing geospatial products and services Skills Required:  ArcGIS and ESRI mapping products. Experience authoring Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata. Must have good communications skills, both oral and written. Must work well in a collaborative environment.

     

    Desirable Skills:

    Familiarity with Spatial Data Standards for Facilities, Infrastructure, & Environment (SDSFIE); Trimble Mapping Grade GPS to collect and process field data; Bentley MicroStation CAD products; ERDAS Imagine software.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    This position will assist the project leaders in developing a geospatial database and data analysis system server for agricultural land use planning and natural resource management for the State of Hawaii. The developed server will have quality-controlled data layers on natural resources, land uses, and economics and be capable of analyzing these geospatial data layers to generate information that meet client needs. The position will also develop the capability to make the populated data layers and data analysis functions available via Internet with a user-oriented, web interface. The project will initially focus on the Kaiaka Bay watershed for prototyping. It is funded by the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture (DOA).

    -. Configure and maintain a geographic information data server, including the host operating system.

    -. Configure and maintain the server to perform various geospatial data analyses, including installations of various software packages.

    -. Develop and maintain a user-oriented, web-based interface to process geospatial data on the server and to retrieve geospatial information from the server.

    -. Assist in developing and populating a geospatial database, and maintain and update the database, including data quality control, metadata, regular backups.

    -. Assist in performing geospatial data analyses that meet client needs.

    -. Regularly meet and communicate with the project leaders, the personnel from DOA, and the CTAHR system administrator who configures and maintains the server hardware -. Perform additional tasks that emerge during the course of the project.
