This joint conference is a partnership of the planning and GIS communities. The Hawaii State Office of Planning (OP), the Hawaii Congress of Planning Officials (HCPO), and the Hawaii Geographic Information Coordinating Council (HIGICC) are putting together an exciting, innovative and productive conference entitled "Building Resilient Communities." The conference is scheduled for September 23-25, 2009, at the Sheraton Waikiki on Oahu. The combined conference will include joint and individual plenary sessions, mobile workshops, breakout sessions and specific educational seminars--in other words--something for everyone. Attendees from either conference will have the freedom to attend any session regardless of registration or affiliation.

The theme of this year's conference is a current topic of interest to all. "Building Resilient Communities" will include a discussion of the environmental, economic, and social components of community resiliency. In particular, resiliency with respect to island issues such as climate change, sea level rise and coastal hazards will be explored and investigated. Case studies and current management methods will be presented to present the state-of-the-art with respect to community resiliency.

Mobile workshops, as well as the sporting tournaments, are planned for Wednesday. Plenary sessions planned for Thursday and Friday mornings, with concurrent breakout sessions on Thursday afternoon.
