Distinguishing Characteristics:
 
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for coordinating and managing the county's overall Geographic Information System (GIS) program or for supervising the GIS program of a major department or large division.  The work involves setting standards for GIS data; coordination and participation in the development, acquisition, verification and editing of GIS data; and overseeing the implementation of data entry projects.


Minimum Qualification Requirements

Plans, organizes, develops and coordinates the overall county-wide Geographic Information System (GIS) program or supervises the GIS program of a major department or large division; manages, evaluates and monitors the operation of the GIS database; participates in the research, analyzes and design of thematic map projects and applications; and performs other duties as required.

License Requirement: Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Hawaii (Equivalent to Hawaii Type 3)

Knowledge of: principles and practices of supervision; geography as it applies to GIS; concepts and principles of GIS; mapping, cartography, surveying, and photogrammetry; data and word processing; statistics; GIS software packages; computer programming language; GIS and capabilities of various types of GIS computer and peripheral equipment; research methods and techniques.

Ability to: plan, assign, coordinate and direct the work of others; supervise the implementation and applications of GIS projects; analyze, correlate, and evaluate thematic map data and records; design and create GIS computer programs to enter, process and create maps, graphics and data reports; effectively communicate and document GIS data and programming requirements as defined by users; develop and formulate long term goals and objectives; develop and administer GIS contracts; maintain effective working relationships with others.
